Chalk + Chick-fil-A

At the end of January 2012, Chalk was approached by Chick-fil-A with an
interesting task – transform the mundane ceiling of a 300’ x 98’ dining
tent into a truly remarkable setting using 80,000 recycled Chick-fil-A
Styrofoam cups.

We got a hold of a couple hundred Styrofoam cups and spent a few days
constructing various shapes like spheres, domes, cylinders, walls and
more. We experimented with different ways of hanging and lighting them,
snapped some photos, put together a presentation, and sent it off.
Shortly after, we were awarded the project.

30,000 cups arrived at Chalk right away and we got to it. Hot-gluing-it 24-7.
We spent a week or so trapped inside a Styrofoam cup fortress,
completing as many pieces as possible before we had to fly. At 7 in the
morning we loaded a trailer and told the driver “To Orlando!”

We arrived the night before our shipment of pre-constructed pieces and an
additional 50,000 cups. The next five days it was non-stop construction –
hanging, lighting, rigging, gluing – and no sleep. At about 3 in the
morning on Sunday we were finally done – and amazed. And once the 4,000
Chick-fil-A franchisees and their spouses made their way into the tent
for the first time, we could tell they felt the same way because they
were pulling out their cameras and phones and snapping away.

Oh yeah, during cup madness, there was entry way design featuring
custom-crafted wine crates that we also needed to be produced. So, we
spent the rest of Sunday and Monday finalizing and installing those
beauties. They brought an otherwise typical brick walkway to life,
adding a warm and classy aesthetic to the evening.

We have received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from this
project. A million thanks to everyone who came through and helped out. On to the next.

Chalk is turning 1

It’s been almost a year since Chalk opened our doors and like any good parent, we’re having a party to celebrate.

If that wasn’t reason enough, DJ’s birthday is right around the corner, so we’re banging out both bashes at once.

Chalk + Escape Artists: Opening Reception

On November 12th, an artistic collective of which the likes have never been seen are taking over Chalk. In partnership with Escape Campervans, this stellar collection features some of todays best surf, skate, tattoo and graffiti artists from California and Florida. With DJs that’ll make your legs wobble, live painting, prints, hats and clothes designed by the featured artists themselves AND more, it’s safe to say that is one of those events that will have you saying, “Daaaamnn! This show is going to be sssssssssick.” Because it is.

Chalk is getting Live on October 22, 2011 with music, art, food and most likely some other great stuff we don’t even know how to put into words yet. This is the first of what will be many Live@Chalk events. And, ladies and gentlemen, it is going to be the jump off.

HOW ABOUT AN AGENDA?
7 pm – Doors open.
Come in, hang out, observe live art being created right before your very eyes by DJ Neff and treat yourself to a new hat, a limited edition screen print or BOTH.

8:30 – Get down to some live musical performances.
We are so stupidly excited to play host to these two artists. We’re not sure who is playing first yet, but we are sure that you should be getting pretty excited right about now.

We’ve got Famous and Robert Raimon Roy (aka Rob Roy).

Famous is a young, smooth, slick, Venice local on the rise. His rhymes are sicky and with The Beat Advocate live at his back, the party goes boom like WHOA.

Robert Raimon Roy may be best known for his super fresh jam Fur in My Cap, however there is much more to his music than a unique flow backed by infectious, melodic beats. He’s deep, smart and illuminating and his new work will force you to boogie.

Chalk + S.H.O.W.

In August 2011, we got wind that Students Helping Our World (S.H.O.W.) was looking for some help creating an online presence. Interested, we did some research and learned that S.H.O.W. is a non-profit program that incentivizes students at low-performing schools to bring their grades up, improve attendance and more. When students at the participating schools reach these set goals, they are awarded with a concert at the end of the year, put on just for them.

The program started in Chicago back in 2009 by David Abrams, who was only 15 at the time. Abrams reached out to Kanye West about the program and West immediately got on-board. S.H.O.W. has been growing each year since and for the 2012 school year, four Los Angeles schools are participating.

All of us at Chalk are excited to be a part of any project that promotes education and benefits the community, so we applied for the assignment and we’re awarded the job. Woot.

Chalk was tasked with creating the corporate identity for S.H.O.W., website, Facebook page and Twitter, YouTube and Vimeo pages.
The program launched at the end of September with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, comedian George Lopez and 3,500 LA county students at Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. Stay tuned for more information about more 2012 S.H.O.W. projects and activities.

Chalk + Fountain Art Fair

Oh, the pretty, pretty cans. Chalk is hyped to be representing at the Fountain Art Fair with Canlove.

What’s the Fountain Art Fair, you ask? Well… “Fountain is an exhibition of avant garde artwork in New York during Armory week, Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach and Los Angeles during Pacific Standard Time weekend.”

This Thursday, August 11th, Chalk gallery and Jacob Vaynshtok present For $ale, their first group show featuring works by Angelina Christina, CANLOVE, Cerraeh “The Dutchess” Laykin, Lindsay Carron, Dennis John Neff, FLEWNT, Jason Saunders, John Park, Jules Muck, Max Neutra, Ross Johnson, Ugo Nonis and more.

All of the featured artists produce an overwhelming amount of beautiful work. This exhibition if focused on a creating the opportunity for interested buyers and art lovers to meet with these rising artists and acquire amazing art at fair prices.

“This is a big event for Chalk and the local art community. The show is testament to the resurgence and growth of the art movement in West LA,” says Jacob Vaynshtok. “We’re showcasing some of the hardest working and most prolific local artists today and Chalk is the perfect place for the show.”

Throughout the night a few of the featured artists will be creating live pieces, while many of the other artists will be present to share their work. There will be free drinks and music by local DJs during the event. And for those who work up an appetite, El Taco Libre will be there to free them from hunger.

Our very own Dj Neff is battling it out with some of LA’s finest at the 5th Annual Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle this Saturday at Crewest Gallery in Downtown LA. Estria and his organization have done so much for the arts and the community. It’s such an honor to be involved with these guys.
